BEECH LODGE - A Gamekeeper's Residence

These very rare - if somewhat blurry - photographs show Beech Lodge, a secluded and pretty cottage in carrstone with brick features which once stood on the high ground to the north of Flitcham, close to Anmer. The high ground meant the water supply was always a problem - even the water tower at Appleton (due west) was unable to feed fresh water.
Consequently, Beech Lodge cottage was demolished in the second half of the 20th century.
For 40 years the cottage was home to William Francis Goodship and his wife Susannah (nee Duffield). William (in the photo right) was a gamekeeper on the Sandringham Estate and on his retirement, moved in to a cottage in Flitcham.
Several coops can be seen in this photograph while a little girl and her cat play in the foreground. The open windows suggest this was a fine summer's day.
