CHURCH ROAD (2)

These are presumed to be the old cottages just before the Church and which faced south. They were rebuilt in 1935 and are now listed as No 9, No 37 & No 38 Church Rd. If the chimney stack far left is in the same position today then everything left (ie west) of it was demolished in 1935 when the mansard roof shown was replaced by a pitched roof over the 2nd floor. (Above) Note the single storey cottages to the left of the church tower and in the front gardens of the present terrace comprising No 9, No 37 & No 38 Church Rd. Note also the little lean-to outbuilding behind the flagpole at the end of the terrace of cottages.
In this rare photo the former single-storey lean-to at the end of the terrace of cottages to the right of the Church tower has been coverted to the little 2 -storey dwelling it is now. This photo almost certainly dates from the early 1930s. It is known that many of the cottages in Church Rd were once single storey - apart from numerous old photos the change of brickwork from 1st floor level is often quite evident. (Though not in this photo, the line of the old mansard roof on the west end gable wall of No 38 is still visible).
