Bates Family 1: The Bates/Bateson Family - both names were used into the early 20th century. Joseph Bates' children were baptised as Bates but generally married as Bateson. Even Joseph's brother Edward adopted the name Bateson

Above Left: James "Jimmy" Bateson (who can be seen in the group photo, right) & Martha. James was born in Flitcham and lived here until at least the time of the 1911 census, with his wife and children. He married his wife Martha Jane Broughton in 1897 in Flitcham. They later moved to Holme-Next-Sea.

Above Right - Amelia Bates born 1898 in Flitcham and was Peter Cooper's grandmother.

Above - Alice Aves-Bateson, wife of Walter, in 1928. Alice's grandfather Benjamin Aves was head Shepherd at Marham Hall for about 30 years and her great uncle Richard Aves was described in 1913 as the most notable Shepherd of the century. Alice was also descended from the Flaxman family of John Flaxman, the sculptor (1755-1826).
Above - Walter Bateson - son of James and Martha (and grandfather of Tracy Skelton). Walter was born in Flitcham in 1910 and married Alice Aves. in 1929.
